In the Interior Architecture wood workshop at Konstfack, there is an old and forgotten machine, a dovetailing machine. The machine is a type of milling machine used to create different kinds of joints. It was originally invented for producing various types of boxes. Today the machine has been replaced by faster construction methods. But just because the machine no longer fits in the modern manufacturing industries I believe it still serves a valuable purpose. The purpose as I see it has simply changed. Today and for me the machine functions more as an artistic tool than a tool for mass production.

The dovetailing machine is an open machine that exposes and reveals its mechanics. In the same way that the machine and its mechanisms fascinate me, I am also fascinated by the patterns and movements of the city. Over the course of the spring semester, I have begun to see connections between the city’s rhythms and patterns and the mechanisms and methods of the dovetailing machine. Using the machine’s different functions, I have constructed furniture and objects whose joints and angles reflect the movements and rhythms of the machine.
