About Interior Architecture and Furniture Design

In this year’s Degree Exhibition, the students examine how – through form, material and use – rooms, furniture and spatial objects carry values, norms and ideas that influence how we live and relate to others. Through investigation and experimental processes, they test how these meanings can be shifted and reinterpreted in relation to contemporary ecological, social and cultural issues. With a critical gaze and stylistic curiosity, the students tackle everyday environments and public spaces where homes, server rooms, metro stations and historical buildings are given new readings and content.

Through reinterpretations and displacements, they examine how established spatial orders can take on other meanings and functions. When the familiar is processed and changed, the assumptions that are commonly taken for granted are also exposed. Several of the degree projects challenge norms and standards through alternative housing forms and small-scale solutions, or through circular ways of working with materials, production and use. Simultaneously, a clear focus emerges on community, participation and recovery in proposals for social areas, rooms for resting, and communal spaces for culture and exchange.

Material, craft and method are central in the designs. Through experiment with, for example, wool, light, sound, ornamentation and collage techniques, a design language is developed in which traditions, aesthetic ideals and contemporary expressions are tested and reinterpreted. The memory, the body and personal experiences serve as driving forces in the works, which move between the physical and the analytical, the poetic and the programmatic.

The students demonstrate how, through spatial processing, interior architecture and furniture design renegotiate the given and influence how spaces, objects and relationships are formed.
