Placing something in a box can be seen as a funeral, or the creation of a small memorial place to visit from time to time.

The things in a memory box lie quietly at rest. They are stuck in a kind of no-man’s-land, liminality embodied.

I have interviewed people and asked them to show me their memory boxes. Opening the lid is an intimate act and reveals parts of a person not everyone gets to see, layers beneath the skin. I have seen where these boxes are kept, the small hiding places for the life that has been.

The participants chose objects gifted by someone they are no longer in contact with, things kept as relationship relics. I have continued working with the objects in order to approach their sentimental value.

The work explores how objects carry relationships and how they change when moved from the private into the public.
