Södra Stadshuset, completed in 1680, is one of Stockholm’s oldest preserved public buildings. It holds the highest cultural heritage classification and today houses the Stockholm City Museum.
My degree project is called “Södra Stadshusets Bakficka” or “The Back Pocket of the Southern City Hall”. It envisions a public meeting space at the intersection of cultural policy, urban space, interior architecture and furniture design. It demonstrates how underutilised areas can be activated and developed into inclusive, dialogue-driven environments, by highlighting the potential within existing spaces and showing how small, precise interventions can open up new possibilities within historical settings.
The interior is designed to make an impression through its form and materiality. The furniture should last for a long time and age gracefully over time. My project explores how history can be translated into physical form through different furniture pieces functioning as a bridge between the collective memory, time and space.
