How will future dementia care homes look in the year 2080?

As life expectancy increases, the number of people living with dementia is expected to rise significantly in the coming decades, placing pressure on already strained dementia care systems.

Today, many dementia care homes are designed to minimise sensory stimuli to reduce stress and anxiety for residents, commonly resulting in institutional and dull environments. In these homes, residents are often confined to their units for safety, which can limit their autonomy.

In my degree project, I explore how interior architecture can rethink these conditions and open up alternative ways of living that support greater autonomy in dementia care while maintaining safety.

Through speculative design, I imagine myself as a future resident in the year 2080 to investigate everyday experiences and spatial needs, exploring how a care home could be designed to feel meaningful and worth living in.
