Have you ever listened to a song and instantly fallen in love? Maybe, it brought back a core memory or a sense of nostalgia. Maybe it transported you to a new place or into a fictional universe. It might have made you wonder how music manages to evoke emotions in your body without your logic understanding why. Afterwards, you desired nothing else but to listen to the song again, again and again.
For my degree project, I have woven a rölakan rug inspired by Taylor Swift’s music and fandom. The design is materialised through the Taylor Swift Music Universe and is, at its core, inspired by song lyrics and aesthetics from albums such as “Speak Now”, “Midnights” and “The Tortured Poets Department”. During the artistic process, I have explored my identity as a Swiftie, constructed an iconographical lexicon and by applying colour symbolism, created an esoteric aesthetic language gifted to Swifties and our collective euphoria.
The albatross soars at sea and by twilight, the church bells chime. On my nightstand, I keep my matches (just in case). I speak in sea blue, violet and brown, gold, sky blue and grayscale. I put my headphones on and felt instantly; it was kismet (fate).
