Aaron Bergstrand
"Water Glimmers As the Sun Sets", Oil on Jute, 140 x 70cmThrough his figurative oil paintings, Aaron Bergstrand (b. 1996) explores questions of identity, place, and belonging, often drawing on his personal experiences of growing up between two different cultural contexts. His work is rooted in childhood memories and family archives. Bergstrand works with thin layers of oil paint, gradually constructing images of places and scenes that seem slightly out of reach for the viewer. They exist in an in-between space, creating a subtle tension between presence and absence.
By using different materials and techniques, such as loosely woven jute and overlapping canvases, he disrupts the picture surface, allowing the material’s own presence to emerge with its own voice and narrative quality.
The works in this exhibition are grounded in childhood memories and revisit places from his upbringing in southern India.
