In my degree project, I explore how bird stations can be designed to create social encounters between birds and patients in palliative care. After spending time with my father on a palliative care ward, it became clear to me how great the need is for stimulation, presence and social connection. Understaffing means that healthcare staff must prioritise basic needs, while social isolation remains a reality for many.

In response, I have designed bird baths, birdhouses, and feeding stations for the palliative unit at Ersta Sjukhus. These enable patients, relatives and staff to feed and interact with the birds, to increase physical, psychological, social and existential well-being.

By engaging sight, sound, and touch, a low-intensity ritual is created that fosters presence and a sense of meaning. Research shows that interactions with birds can reduce stress, strengthen a connection to nature, and enhance social connection.

The birds become a symbol of freedom and a reminder that life and nature continue beyond illness and healthcare units.
