A Room for Farewell

Historically, the place where people died has been the same place where they lived. In the best case, a place of care and love. But over the past hundred years, that has changed. Nowadays, most people’s dying moments take place in a hospital or a nursing home. This also means that the place where we say our last goodbyes to a loved one after death is rarely at home, but in constructed rooms in various care institutions. How can these rooms be built to make the final farewell as dignified and healing as possible?
In my degree project, I have approached this question by focusing on craft and materials as guiding principles for creating a space for both the living and the dead.
