In my degree project, I have constructed a city square through fictional and actual memory images, and by working with a certain machine in Konstfack\u2019s woodworking shop \u2013 the dovetailer. The machine makes different compositions, and with its help I have translated fragments from different places in the urban space into patterns and structures that together form a city square. <\/p>\n
The dovetailer is an open machine that exposes and reports its mechanisms. It is controlled manually using two knobs and a lever. Just as the machine and its mechanisms fascinate me, I am fascinated by the city\u2019s patterns and movements.<\/p>\n
The square is like an open machine. Different things happen there, which you can observe and participate in. People\u2019s movements and rhythms are like a belt in the square\u2019s machinery. The different elements of the square become like gears. The square\u2019s start\/stop button becomes the presence of people. Without people, the square machine stands still.
